For the first time in France, Martin Palmeri's 'Eine jüdische kantate' will be performed by the Ensemble vocal et orchestral Le Tourdion de Dole conducted by Florence Grandclément.
Two exceptional concerts of this original work of classical music for choir, orchestra and bandoneon are scheduled:
18 May 2025 at 6 p.m. in the Cordeliers church in Lons-le-Saunier.
23 May at 8.30pm in the Saint-Jean church in Dole.
The vocal ensemble Le Tourdion de Dole continues its exploration of classical works by contemporary composers. The concert will feature Martin Palmeri, the Argentinian composer best known for his emblematic work 'Misatango', which is in the repertoire of many choirs around the world. With 'Eine Jüdische Kantate', Martin Palmeri fuses the worlds of Yiddish and Argentinian music.
For these two concerts in Dole and Lons-le-Saunier, an orchestra of 20 professional and amateur musicians from the region will join the Ensemble vocal Le Tourdion, with bandoneonist Jérémy Vannereau, who has shared the stage with composer and pianist Martin PALMERI on several occasions.
In Eine JÜDISHE KANTATE the Argentinian composer cleverly fuses traditional Yiddish songs with Latin psalms, uniting these two distinct musical worlds and offering a composition that is both respectful of history and resolutely modern.
Martin Palmeri skilfully blends elements of Jewish and Christian traditions. The use of the bandoneon and solo clarinet adds emotional depth and a unique colour to the composition. The bandoneon, often associated with Argentine tango, lends melodic richness and expressive character, while the clarinet adds softness and fluidity to complement the Yiddish melodic lines. It creates a dialogue between two rich musical cultures.
The first part will feature two classical works by contemporary composers:
Eric Whitacre's Five Hebrew Love Songs brings together five songs that evoke moments of love and tenderness through haunting melodies and complex harmonies. The Hebrew texts, written by poet Hila Plitmann, are set to music by Eric Whitacre, renowned for his ability to create immersive soundscapes where music and poetry meet in harmony.
A Song of Miriam by Elaine Hagenberg pays tribute to one of the most emblematic female figures in the biblical texts, Miriam, the sister of Moses. Elaine Hagenberg illustrates Miriam's courage and strength through rich, lively and expressive choral writing.
Martín Palmeri was born in Buenos Aires in 1965. He studied composition, singing, piano and conducting. He is the author of Misa a Buenos Aires, known as Misatango, premiered in 1996. A work for choir, string orchestra and bandoneon. Many choirs around the world, particularly in France and Germany, have included Misatango in their repertoire. Le Toudion has booked Martin Palmeri for two concerts in July 2019, in Dole and Dijon.
